What is Modern Style?

Contemporary design is frequently used interchangeably with modern design, leading many to mistakenly conflate the two. However, in truth, these are distinct design styles from different periods.

Modern Home Design is characterized by its clean, sharp lines, geometric forms, and a minimalistic color palette. This no-frills approach extends to the materials utilized in modern homes, often featuring metal, glass, and steel. The essence of modern design lies in simplicity, even extending to the furniture pieces within the home. It is renowned for its functional interior design, emphasizing the harmonious blend of form and function.

History of Modern Style

Modern design is rooted in a specific era that spans from the early to the mid-20th century. Originating during the turn of the century, this style emerged as a response to industrialization and gradually gained prominence throughout the first half of the century. Notably, it gave rise to two offshoots: midcentury modern, which was particularly popular during the 1940s to the 1960s, and post-modern design, which emerged in the 1970s and has continued to evolve since then.

During the early to mid-20th century, modernism embodied a forward-looking vision, leveraging the potential of machinery to provide accessible housing and furniture solutions to the masses. The movement aimed to combine aesthetics with practicality, embracing clean lines, simplicity, and functional design principles.

  1. Open Concept Floor Plan
Modern design prefers as few walls as possible. Furniture, instead, differentiates spaces, like a kitchen counter providing a visual distinction from a living or dining room.
  2. Natural Light
Abundant natural light is also necessary to help a space feel more airy and open, so windows are kept unadorned.
  3. Clean Lines
The design styles preceding modern design were Gothic, Renaissance, and Victorian styles. They incorporated heavy textures, ornamentation, and plenty of dark and dramatic elements. Modern design rejected these aspects in favor of clean, straight lines, uncluttered spaces, and an overall lack of fussiness.
